About Activists For Climate Justice Initiative

A4CJ is a grassroots, youth-led movement in Uganda focused on climate justice and community empowerment.

The Activists for Climate Justice Initiative (A4C) actively works to combat climate issues through community mobilization, advocacy, and legal support. We are dedicated to amplifying the voices of those affected by fossil fuel projects and are recognized for our impactful campaigns against destructive energy practices. Our commitment to social justice and environmental sustainability sets us apart in the fight for a better Uganda.

Natural Resources Governance Program

This program works to ensure that communities have transparent, fair and accountable control over their natural resources-land, water, forests and minerals.

The Indigenous Batwa Program

Focused on the Batwa people (often called forest peoples), this program aims to restore dignity, rights, and livelihoods of an indigenous group displaced and marginalized due to conservation efforts and land dispossession.

Environmental Defenders Mentorship Program

A program to support, train and protect individuals standing up for environmental justice.

Our Journey

History of Activists For Climate Justice Initiative

Founded in response to the growing threats from fossil fuel projects, A4C has been at the forefront of climate activism in Uganda since its establishment. The initiative has mobilized thousands of youth and community members, advocating for the rights of those impacted by environmental injustices and challenging powerful institutions to prioritize sustainable development.

In my report, I found that climate activist Barigye Bob had been arrested and psychologically tortured for opposing the EACOP project.
He told me that authorities labeled activists like him as “attention seekers” while quietly silencing their efforts.
Despite the repression, Barigye remains resolute in his fight for Uganda’s environment and climate justice.

I reported that climate activists Bob Barigye, Mutesi Zarika, Naruwada Shamim and Nalusiba Phionah were violently arrested in Kampala for peacefully protesting the EACOP pipeline.
The #StopEACOP coalition described the arrests as “unjust” and a deliberate attempt to silence dissent against the project.
Experts and campaigners emphasized that peaceful protest is a democratic right and called on Ugandan authorities to drop all charges against the activists.
